How can i stop iCloud drive on macOS El Capitan...

How can i stop iCloud drive on my macOS El Capitan MacBook Pro(with 500G SSD) from automatically download everything on my iCloud drive (with over 500G data) ?

I'm also interesting about it. Some files I really want to be stored just icloud but I couldn't find any way to do it. But interestingly, I was upgraded to High Sierra with clean installation. After that, I see lots of cloud icon that gives me a option to download it to my mac

Thanks Donbaloglu.  My MacBook Pro early 2008 model cannot upgrade to newer macOS so I am hoping there is a solution to this.
