Korg microKey USB
Hey everyone!
I have a new Korg microKey mkII 49-key USB-MIDI controller here, brand new. It used to work fine with my 2012 MacBook Air but fails to work with 2016 MacBook Pro (13" with touch bar) - it turns on but then turns off as soon as I press any key. I tried with both a direct USB-C to USB-B cable and with its stock cable via a USB-A to USB-C dongle. I have a lot of other USB devices that work fine with it.
Do you know how I can troubleshoot this? The device seems to be requesting 100 mA of current and a reported 500 mA is available. Also I tried all four USB ports on the MBP.

I spent a tonne of time troubleshooting my Microkey 2 and 2016 MBP, given it works on literally every other machine I tried it on.
The word from Korg support is that it's acknowledged and under investigation. The workarounds I was provided with were the following:
- Inserting a USB hub (can be powered or non-powered) between the USB-C adaptor and the microKEY 2 should get things working.
- Otherwise, the USB-C Digital AV Multiport adaptor has been successfully tested with the microKEY 2 keyboards and the new MacBook Pro.
Whilst it's not ideal (TBH my experience with the 2016 MBP hasn't been much fun so far) hopefully you have a USB hub lying around or can borrow one.
Similarly I have a Roland FP4 and have the new MacBook with touchbar. The first time I connected my piano to the laptop using a usb cable it worked fine for over 5 hours. The next day I used it, it decided to keep dropping the connection and hasn't worked ever since. I connect the piano and garageband says there's 1 midi connection made, and then about 5 seconds later it'll say it's disconnected. Quite annoying considering the first day I used it without any problem, and I've checked all connections by using my old MacBook which still works fine.
Is this a power problem between the usb midi cable and the usb-c adapter?
Korg support told me that they've tested the microKey II line with the new MacBook Pro and it worked fine. So it may be that something is wrong with my particular unit - perhaps some USB-C interference which I have read about, many manufacturers are having issues with it, not just Apple. I did try many different cable configurations - the only way it works is via a small USB hub (i.e. a bigger dongle that connects via USB-C and has 2-3 USB-A ports).

Hey, thanks for your reply! Yeah, I also just got a message from Korg support and this is exactly the same answer they provided. Basically it seems that their devices are struggling with a direct USB-C connection - on my side it does work via a hub too. I do hope this is something they can fix via a firmware update though! I have a few other USB MIDI devices (Arturia MicroBrute, Novation Bass Station II) and they work fine regardless if the cable or cable+adaptor I used.
Hi all. I don't know whether this will fix your problems, but my piano is now working seamlessly following the most recent GarageBand update (10.1.6). If you haven't already, go and download it now!!!
Thanks for the heads up, but still not solved for me.
I got some audio out the microKey in Logic but in the time it took me to excitedly yell out to my fiance that it was working it stopped working and then got stuck playing one note and wouldn't stop until I quit Logic. Upon reopening it the keyboard didn't work at all as per previous behaviour. I also tried Garageband with no luck.
Oh well. Let's keep waiting and see what happens.
Logic was showing the connection yet I wasn't getting any sound, and pulling my hair out.
The hub in between did the trick. Thanks!!
