I understand you are having trouble connecting to your USB midi controller with your 2017 MacBook Pro.  The resource below explains the different connections that can be made with the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports.  You may need to check with the manufacturer of your audio device, but the USB-C to USB Adapter should work for most USB devices.
