white box on desktop

macOS Sierra 10.12.6

Almost everyday this small white box appears on my desktop. I can't move it or hide it and it stays above every other window. Closing all other programs and even restarting Finder doesn't make it go away. The only way to get rid of it is to reboot, but eventually it shows up again.
