virus scanner crashes
Currently my mac is running so slowly it is like a doorstop. I have tried AVG, Avira, Total AV, and Bitdefender. Every one of them freezes up the entire computer before the scan is finishes. They all show that there are viruses present, but because they crash at 99%, they don't quarantine them, or even show me a report.
before someone suggest this, yes I have always removed the previous virus protector before installing a new one, so the problem is not that I am running multiple virus protectors, because I am not. my current one is BitDefender.
I've managed to figure out that some of the viruses ones called Firseria, and DomalQ, and I think something called Snowbitt. I also have Malwarebites for Mac, and it has removed a few things, but it can't locate these and it has not solved the problem of the computer being slow.
First of all, why are all the virus protectors crashing at 99%, and how do I fix it.
Second of all, if I cant fix the virus protection, then how do I remove these viruses manually?
I am running a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.53GHz, Mid 2009) El Capitan 10.11.6
What I suggest is copy all the files you need onto an external hardrive, then erase your Mac by recovery mode (hold ⌘+R during startup). Use disk utility to erase and the install is pretty self explanatory. This will definitely make your Mac a lot faster. Copy files back when done.
Macs do not need and do not work well with antivirus software, all of which is crap. Remove whatever antivirus you still have installed and NEVER put it back.
Then run a report (with this) and post it here for us to see.
Never use antivirus software unless your intention is to bork your Mac.
Your reply is the best, 'cept I dont have the installation disks. How would I do that?
I suggest you use the program created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. It will provide a snapshot of your system which we can analyze to possibly determine the cause of your problem. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

thanks, but I highly disagree. Ive been using macs since 1990, and I have always had virus protection on them. The idea that macs dont get virus' is a myth and always has been. sure there are fewer virus' but the still exist as this situation proves. What I dont understand is how the virus got past the AVG I was already running.
Thanks iIl try that.
Because it is crap (AVG I mean)
EDIT: You can download your copy of OS X from the App Store, you will also need another flash drive.
After you open it, you should be able to make an installation disk from the usb drive. there are plenty of instructions on youtube, its been a while since I've done it

There is a thing called a "false positive". Lots of AV software flags things (especially on Macs) as viruses or malware that simply aren't. I don't believe there are any current viruses affecting Macs. There is some malware. However, it is far, far more likely that the AV programs are causing the problems. Adware is also another likely culprit. That's why running Etrecheck is so highly recommended. It will let you (and us) see exactly what's on your computer.
Good post apart from the bit about using CMD-R to invoke Recovery. Recovery was not fitted to pre 2010 MacBook Pros so it will not work at all.
Nice effort, bad aim.
wasn't sure how long ago they made the switch
It varies with machine but for a Macbook Pro it is mid 2010, MacBooks and iMacs are late 2009.
