Error while trying to synchronize Audio and MIDI
I get this message when using the plugins BFD3 (drums) and Izotope Nectar 2 (vocals). In both cases the message is followed by:
Sample Rate xx xxx recognized.
Check conflict between Logic Pro X and external device.
The message can't be ignored; the sound on all tracks becomes horribly distorted.
I've tried deleting the com.apple.logic10.plist and com.apple.logic.pro.cs files and rebooting--no joy! The problem remains.
I'm using Logic Pro X 10.2.0 on an early 2015 MacBook Pro.
So, I'm thinking there must be some MIDI sync function that I need to change.
Can anyone please help? Thanks.
OK--help not being forthcoming, I experimented, and the problem seems to be solved. Here are the keys:
1) Increase the I/O buffer size to at least 256 samples. I'd made it 128 to insure low latency; but that was too low. Latency is not a problem at 256 or even 512, and evidently these MIDI plugins need the larger buffer.
2) Under "MIDI preferences," click the MIDI Sync tab, and then click the "MIDI Sync Project Settings..." button. In the MIDI Clock section, tick the "Auto-compensate Plug-in Latency" box. I'm not sure what that contributes to the "Error while trying to synchronize Audio and MIDI" error, but it looks like it should be key. However, unless the buffer is large enough, ticking this "Auto-compensate" box doesn't help. All I can say for certain is that ticking it doesn't seem to hurt anything.
It's not surprising you didn't get a reply, that error can be caused by so many scenarios it's difficult to diagnose. Logic's internal MIDI timing is based on the audio clock, the error means that Logic's internal timing between audio clock and MIDI has somehow become unstable. The error can be caused by anything from running Logic on a Retina screen, bad or dated audio drivers, a cheap MIDI interface, too many applications running in the background, running out of RAM (memory), running at too high a sample rate, stick to 44.1 or 48kHz.
Here's some settings that might help. note: Settings are per song, they're not Global like preferences.
Logic/Settings/Synchronization-General tab
Sync Mode "Internal" uncheck all of the selection boxes.
Under the MIDI tab unless you're syncing external synths to MIDI clock uncheck all of the boxes, set destinations to off.
Under the Audio tab set Audio Sync Mode to: External or Free
Help not forthcoming? I've written maybe twenty, thirty or forty times about this issue - others have written hundreds of times about this issue. Maybe try searching first.
