Time to ditch mid

My MacBook Pro, which has been a workhorse for seven years, is increasingly having problems. The sound setting keeps randomly switching back and forth between the internal speakers and the headphones port. I can't communicate with my printer anymore. The computer seems to run hotter than appropriate for the slow fan speed. It's on its second battery and third hard drive. It's like... tired.

When is it time to say good-bye to the Mac? Are the problems I'm experiencing software related or hardware related? If the latter, how do you know that? And how do you know when the hardware's on a downward spiral -- and it's time to just get a new computer?

And how do you know the problems being experienced on the old mac won't be experienced on the new one as well?

What to do?

Thanks.

David

Any computer seven years old is, well, old and outdated. Additionally, some/all of the hardware including the logic board may fail at any time. And, depending on how much RAM you have, the newer OS versions all require more than the older machines. So, I'd say, you can take it to your nearest Genius Bar and ask them to run their diagnostics on it which will tell you the current shape everything is in, but I would start looking for a replacement.
