iPhone calendar synch does not work with MacBoo...
Recently my MacBook Pro calendar lost its content. The calendar entries are still on my iPhone, but iTunes does not synch the iPhone calendar with the MacBook Pro calendar. The problem appeared after I had been trying to synch with iCloud but then gave up. Any suggestions would be immensely appreciated. Thanks.
Calendars are not sync-ed in the way we think of sync-ing files. To share a calendar, you place the Master Calendar on an Internet-visible Server, and all readers actually SHARE that original Master Calendar rather than SYNC the data.
If your Master Calendar is on your Mac, it cannot be seen by others unless you turn your Mac into a Server and allow access from the Internet. (NOT recommended).
Instead, make sure you are placing your Events on a Calendar already available on the Internet. Use your Calendar on iCloud, Google calendar, AOL, Yahoo, or similar. Then allow others devices (and other users if you like) access to that same calendar.

Thanks for the reply. However I've synched my iPhone calendar directly with my laptop for years, first with a PC and now with a MacBook. That's what doesn't work now - starting two days ago. No Internet involved.
By the way the latest changes on the computer show up on the iPhone calendar and vice versa. That's always been my understanding of synching - no master calendar invol
This article lists the ways you can sync calendars. ALL involve using iCloud or another Server. Your method was never supported, and is no longer working.

Hmmm - I'm not sure you and Grant Bennet-Alder are speaking about the same issue. My iPhone, iPad and Mac all sync together nicely with the Calendar.
Have a look at this support page from Apple, and hopefully it will help.

Apple says you can use iTunes on a Mac to directly synchronize calendars and contacts with an iPhone - no internet involved
I stand corrected.
As long as you are willing to only sync by physically plugging in, this article says that you CAN sync using iTunes:
iTunes for Mac: Sync contacts, calendars, and other info with iPod, iPhone, or iPad
Yup. That's what I've been doing for years. As I said originally it stopped working a couple of days ago. So my question is: why?
I'm not sure why it changed either. It used to work that way. I recently upgraded from an iPhone 4 to an iPhone SE and had to do the software updates to make it work. Afterwards I found the synch via USB cable was not as complete as it was before, (like in the last decade of using iTunes, USB, and iPods / iPhones). Perhaps Apple is pushing for only iCloud synching now? Likely this is intentional.
What I found for both Calendars and Contacts is the "On my Mac" or "All on My Mac" no longer synchronizes. Only the content under the iCloud section synchs.
If I want it on both my devices, it now has to be in the iCloud section for both Calendars and Contacts. Any new event I make in Calendar on my mac has to be in the iCloud section. We can click on the colour and switch it from from either without having to re-enter it. New events made on the iPhone will appear on the Mac, under the iCloud banner. Ditto for contacts.
If you don't have an iCloud Account in your Calendar, add one in and set it up to see if all your iPhone events now show up after synching.
