How to sync my hotmail account?

I've been using my ancient hotmail account without any problems for years on my macbook, but since some time, the regular Mail app from Apple doesn't sync anymore. Tried to remove and reinstall the account, but keep getting the message that it is "Unable to verify account name and password". I'm sure I'm using the right combination; works fine in browser window. I read that creating an @outlook alias should help, but I get the same error message when I try to add this account to Mail. Anyone an idea what is going on here, and how I can fix this?
