Macbook 'Notes' not syncing with iCloud

I have a white Macbook (Late 2009) running OSX Yosemite 10.10.5

The notes app on the Mac is not syncing with my iCloud account.

I am able to access all up-to-date notes on my iPhone 6S and at icloud.com but for some reason my Mac app is not uploading or downloading new notes.

I have tried the usual solutions such as toggling 'Notes' on/off within the iCloud settings in the Mac's System Preferences, and have done the same on my devices but no joy.

All other iCloud functions (drive, calendar, contacts etc.) are working fine on the Mac.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

There was a Notes upgrade that requires El Capitan or later.
