Time Machine Question
Running Sierra 10.12.6 on MacBookPro Retina. I have a 2TB external drive I use for Time Machine and other stuff. On the Help page, Apple says that Time Machine will automatically delete backup as space is needed. When exactly does this happen? I have close to 1TB of old backups and I'd like to purge a majority of them, but I want to do it properly and not delete something that will cause problem later on if I need to restore my current laptop hard drive. How does one delete old Time Machine backups?
It will delete them when it runs out of space on the drive it is using.
What do you consider "old backups?"
Time Machine doesn't back up the same file over and over each time it makes a backup. It only makes a new copy when the file changes.
You can Enter Time Machine, find a file and right-click (or ctrl-click) on it and choose to Delete all Backups of ____
You cannot pick a particular backup folder and delete it.
My backups go back to beginning of 2014, and I usually back up once a month, depending on how much work I am doing on my laptop.
I know it doesn't backup the same file each.
I just wonder if I should wait till I run out of hard drive space on my back up disc or delete the massive amount of backups myself.
"Delete all Backups of___" of what?
"Delete all Backups of___" of what?
Of what you had selected when you invoked the contextual menu which gives you options to apply to the selected item.
I know it doesn't backup the same file each.
I just wonder if I should wait till I run out of hard drive space on my back up disc or delete the massive amount of backups myself.
Again, I go back to what do you consider an "old backup?"
Do you want to keep a backup of the files stored on your Mac, or do you want to somehow selectively delete some of the backups of the files, but not others?
Assume there is a file you created three years ago. It was backed up by Time Machine then. There is only one file in the Time Machine backup that is a backup of that document. Could that an "old backup" which you want to delete?
If so, Delete the file from your hard drive and the backup of it will eventually be deleted.
In a given backup set, how would you tell Time Machine which files are "old backups" and which are items it should keep?
Time Machine is designed to not be managed by the user. It takes care of itself.
