Scaled screen and Video Resolution

I'm using a MacBook Pro 15-inch and I like to set the display scaling to show everything "one step bigger" so I don't have to squint to use the interface. However, in this mode, playing an HD video file ends up being slightly pixelated -- it doesn't seem to upscale to the display the same way as it does in the native resolution.

It's odd because the OS interface itself doesn't pixelate, it simply "zooms in" a bit, but still gives you the "retina" feel.

HD video in the standard scaling gets upscaled to retina and shows no pixelation, but in scaled view, the video file resolution deteriorates.

Does anyone know a way around this? Is there a setting a command to override this?

Thank you in advance!
