Upgrade HDD to SSD in simple & fast way
I've bumped with issue when i wanted to upgrade HDD to SSD on my Mac Mini without re-installation OSX. There are a lot of articles where described solution with "Restore" feature when i can restore configured OSX from HDD to SSD, but this solution doesn't work on OSX 10.12.6 (Sierra), when i start restoring process it will appear some error message.
So, i've found solution:
Preconditions:
Your old HDD is still in the Mac Mini, you put new SSD to the enclosure and connected to your Mac Mini via USB.
1. Open the standard app "Disc Utility", select your new SSD and click "Erase" button in the panel, type any SSD name you want, format - "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and click "Erase" button.
2. Delete all unneeded files, empty Trash;
3. Open menu "File" -> "New Image" -> "Image from Folder...".
4. In opened window select your computer (e.g. "MacMini") in category "Devices" and select your old HDD (e.g. "Macintosh HD") and click button "Open".
5. In item "Save As" type the image name (any you want), in item "Where" select your erased SSD, Encryption - "none", Image Format - "read only", click button "Save" (the process may take a long time, in my case 80Gb was cloning about 50mins).
6. After successful saving of HDD image (it should be located on new SSD) in app "Disc Utility" click menu "Images" -> "Verify" and select saved image on new SSD, click "Open" button.
7. After successful verifying move saved image file from new SSD to your old HDD, after moving check your SSD, it should be empty.
8. In app "Disc Utility" select your new SSD and click "Restore" button, then click "Image..." button, select your saved and verified image from old HDD and click "Open" button, then click "Restore" button (the process of restoring may take a long time, in my case for 80Gb was restored about 50 mins).
9. After successful restoring new SSD from verified and restored image, reboot the OSX and hold the "Alt" button to enter to the Boot Loading menu, select new SSD (at this step it is still a USB connected device) storage to check the successful booting.
10. After boot up from the new SSD (image was cloned and restored on the new SSD successfully) you have to shutdown your Mac and replace old HDD with new SSD, instructions can be found on youtube.
Don't hurry up to erase your old HDD with OSX, check your OSX with new SSD for stability.
