I want to do a clean install but it may not fix...

I have a 2011 iMac and over the years, it has become quite sluggish.  The only thing I have upgraded is the RAM (currently at 8Gb).  I've never performed a clean install of any OS X/MacOS.  I've always upgraded.  I want to do a clean install.  I have a time machine backup, but I'm concerned that if the sluggishness is caused by software then a time machine restore will just bring the problem back. On the other hand, there are 6 years worth of files and programs that I'd like to be able to restore.

Does anyone have any advice on the best way to proceed here?

Thanks.

Run this program and post the results by using Share Report > Copy to Clipboard and then paste it into a reply here.

If it is a bunch of software coagulating the OS, then we may be able to offer suggestions based on the output.

You may wish to not bog down a fully new re-install of the main latest update of the

most current system (perhaps your mac's now upgraded to the present macOS) due

to adding back a ton of old stuff.

Be selective and weed it out; you could have the bulk of extras on an external HDD

to be able to look into it and see if it is worth saving awhile longer. Or sort out & trash

what isn't valid in today's world. At least not in the Mac's running hard drive anymore.

• About macOS Recovery - Apple Support

{If you choose to erase & install, there are two methods of using Recovery; note the

blue text section in this page where you see more ways to reinstall the system.}

You can manually migrate most desired content from a second drive into a new install.

However the best results would be to keep that archive separate and not bring up all

the old stuff. Pick and choose carefully. Use instruction for Migration in OS Tips or

Move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support

Also, if you choose to upgrade the capacity of the internal hard disk drive, that should

be capable of working correctly in the location where the original was installed; as a

thermal sensor is involved in the proper fan control, without the correct replacement

hard disk drive or a modified kit (such as OWC macsales has) the fans will run on full.

Large external storage and perhaps even a complete bootable clone of the present

system on there, before you do much else, may be an idea; this is another complete

backup that supersedes any limited Time Machine archive. A self-powered externally

enclosed hard drive that can use the fastest ports and cables to run adequately, is a

good way use a 'full clones' as bootable backup. Or a significantly thinned down one.

• Apple OS X and Time Machine Tips:

https://pondini.org/TM/Home.html

A few retail clone utilities that may be suitable include the widely known CarbonCopy

Cloner by Bombich; another is SuperDuper by shirtpocket software. You could also

use the Disk Utility to make a disk image to move into another hard drive. When you

wipe the original drive, the effect is much like getting a new Mac, except then you'd

need to either erase the entire drive by use of macOS Recovery online or by use of

the version in the Mac partition within the hard drive.

• OS X Tips: Setting-up a new mac from an old one, its Backups, or a PC

https://pondini.org/OSX/Setup.html

So an ideal concept would be to make a few great backups including a clone or two,

before you attempt to do a fully new installation; & some of the Time Machine could

be reused as needed to restore the old stuff into an all new. But I'd not do that. Each

of my Macs for the most part have been new, other than files in external drives and

bookmarks, contacts, etc are brought in later. Same thing when a fully new re-install

is done from scratch. A clean fully updated clone could also be made before you

add any older content via the Migration assistant or manually. For an offline backup.

A good idea, too; create an Etrecheck report because those details may help us see

what is bogging down your Mac system. A full drive? Extensions from old apps?

Maybe even some unnecessary antivirus or other misbegotten stuff is slowing it up.

Hopefully this isn't too boring a read...

..And I see it's not automatically saving.

Good luck & happy trails!

This is definitely the right place to start. You might find a simple solution due to one errant app. Also, if you do find an app causing the issue, there are a number of good tools for completely removing apps from your Mac. In many cases, just deleting the app will work, but sometimes there are startup components that need to be moved. The EtreCheck report will help figure this out.

I'm concerned that if the sluggishness is caused by software then a time machine restore will just bring the problem back.

If you were to perform a complete restoration of a system that exhibited that same sluggishness, yes it would.

I want to do a clean install but it may not fix my issue

That's correct. You should always rule out hardware failure before suspecting software. How do you know your Mac's internal hard disk drive is working properly? For one suggestion please read How to set up and use an external Mac startup disk - Apple Support.

What you propose might not be necessary, but if that's really what you want to do follow the procedure below.

  • Erase the Mac using macOS Recovery, and then create a new User Account whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files from the Time Machine backup.
    • To erase and install macOS read How to reinstall macOS.
      • Follow the instructions in that document under use Disk Utility to erase your built-in hard disk.
      • Then, follow the procedure in Move your content to a new Mac.
      • When asked how you want to transfer your information, select Transfer from a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk.
      • Under Select the Information to Transfer, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
  • Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require.
  • Install software only from original and unaltered sources, and omit all non-essential software.
  • "Non-essential software" is a broad category that includes but is not limited to third party "cleaning", "maintenance", and "anti-virus" products.
