How can I play my iTunes from an external drive?

I recently switched from an old MacBook Pro to a MacBook Air, which doesn't have enough memory for my music. I copied my iTunes Music file onto an external drive. On the Air, I started iTunes with the Option key pressed, hit 'Choose Library,' went to the drive, chose the iTunes music folder, and I got the answer "An iTunes Library File Could not be found in the folder 'iTunes Music.' Please choose another folder." What should I do?

The iTunes Library.itl file, which is the iTunes database, is normally located in the iTunes folder. iTunes Music is the old name for the media folder which would usually be found inside the iTunes folder. Did you copy the whole iTunes folder to the external drive, or just iTunes Music?
