iPad and iCloud account acting strangely...
Hello everyone,
Recently my iPad and my iCloud account have started to act strange. Some of the strange things my iPad has done:
•Warm up while playing games and watching YouTube videos (this did not happen very often before)
•Require me to input my iCloud password before allowing me to update apps (never done that before)
•Have a slow internet connection while Wifi bars show as full (could be just bad hotel wifi though)
Here are some strange things my iCloud account has done:
•Show my location as Dallas, Texas when I was trying to sign into my account on this site (I was in Log Angeles at the time)
•Require me to input my password to update apps (only iPad so far I believe)
Is my iCloud account comprimised? How do you know if it has been, and how do you regain control of it?
Also, does my iPad have any kind of virus/adware/malware/spyware on it? As I have mentioned in previous posts, I have
•Fallen for a phony virus popup and downloaded a (seemingly legitimate) VPN app (Hotspot VPN) from the app store (which I later deleted)
•Found 2 apps in my purchase history that I do not remember downloading (most likely I downloaded them, deleted them after finding them boring/glitchy, and forgot)
•Witnessed my screen freeze for 10 seconds and then see apps start opening themselves and my keyboard start typing by itself (may have been lag)
•Seen my iCloud account and my App Store behave unusually
•Accidentally changed the DNS connection of my wifi network to some random (possibly malicious) servers via the Wifi section in Settings
•Connected to the wrong Wifi network at an airport by accident
•Witnessed websites on both Safari and Chrome redirect me to websites with fake gift card / iDevice giveaways
Now, according to many other people on this forum, an iPad is mostly invincible to malware because:
•You have to jailbreak your iPad to download apps or any blocks of code from outside the app store (or flick through several permission popups)
•Apps are sandboxed so one app cannot change code on another
•There is basically no chance of getting malware from an app downloaded from the app store
•The virus warning popups are phising scams and can be taken care of by clearing Website Data in Settings
•Android is a much easier target
•Basically the only way for malware to get on an iPad is by installing a profile, jailbreaking or being infected via an exploit (SCARY!)
•You have to be prompted before downloading anything
Are all of these true? And if so, what can explain the strange behavior of my iCloud account?
Also, a few minutes ago I just received all the Mail notifications I should have received in the past 4 days (could be due to me messing with Notifications settings though)
Is the same Apple/iCloud ID that you are being asked to provide the passcode for signed into the iTunes & App Store (Settings>iTunes & Apps Store) on the iPad? If the Apple ID that purchased the app is different than the one signed into the iTunes & App Store, it will ask for the password in order to do the update.
Do you have Location turned on for both the Safari and Chrome websites under Settings>Privacy>Location Services?
The device getting warm while playing games and watching YouTube videos is not unusual. Both use a lot of CPU.
You have provided suggestions as to what could be the cause of several of the problems that you are reporting. They are likely the cause as you have surmised.
Your iPad does not have a virus unless you have jailbroken it. If you have not, then it does not have a virus. If you have provided personal information to a phony website, then hopefully you took the precautions necessary to protect your privacy (like changing your password and alerting your card company).
Redirects to websites are controlled by the website addresses you are putting into your search or that you are linking to. Don't go to those websites.
Nothing else sounds out of the ordinary, but rather things that have happened as a result of other actions you have taken.
Cheers,
GB
