Can't sign out of iCloud on mac due to mail app...

I am trying to completely sign out of my iCloud on my mac desktop due to an inactive email address.  I have successfully changed my iCloud account on all other devices, but I cannot change the active account on the mac.  I go to Preferences>iCloud> and click sign out and it states "Mail was unable to delete --username--.  Please relaunch mail then sign out of iCloud again".  I cannot uncheck the Mail box.

Any suggestions?

Thank you! I went ahead and entered the command in the Terminal and it logged me out and allowed me to reset the iCloud!  Appreciate the help!
