iPad Mini won't show iOS10 update?

Hi all.

My iPad mini 1st gen won't show the option to update to iOS10 via iTunes or wirelessly.

Any suggestions how to do it?

The first generation iPad Mini cannot support iOS 10, and as such is not listed as a supported device in

https://www.apple.com/ios/ios-10/

Only iPad Mini 2 and later.

Your iPad’s CPU isn’t powerful enough to run iOS 10.

So there's no way to do it? The iPad Mini is listed under supported devices?

1. Correct.

2. The second generation and newer ones are. The first generation isn’t.

Ahhhh, I see. I was apparently looking at an unofficial listing which included the first gen.

Thanks for the correct link!

Does this mean the iPad mini 1st generation will become obsolete without new updates?

Eventually yes as with all technology there's a point in their life where all technology becomes obsolete. I don't see many people using Palm Pilots now for instance.

For now, it can still run most of the millions of Apps in the store, and still does the same things it did before iOS 10 was released. So its NOT obsolete now.

It will only be obsolete when it no longer does you need it to do. As of now it probably still has a couple more years of life even without the update.

And that's why I dumped my iPhone, and soon my last Apple device Gen1 iPad Mini, no reward for early adopters from Apple!

Reward? Why do you feel you should be rewarded? And it what what way is a new version of iOS a "reward".You purchased a product that you thought was of sufficient quality at a price that you were willing to pay.

Good luck finding any manufacturer that will provide software updates to a device for longer than Apple does.

Most of them end support for devices after 3 years. Some like samsung have no update support for many devices right out of the box.

The iPad Mini is going on 5 years old now. And any iPhone newer than the 4s which is already over 5 Years old also got the update to iOS 10.

So all you are doing is whining because your old device which would likely would not have gotten an update from any other manufacturer for the last 2 years did not get one from Apple now.

I ask this regularly, and never seem to get an answer. How long should Apple support a specific product with updates?  And at what point would you say its acceptable to stop support for a product.  And most importantly why?

They should support it longer than 5 years when school and education are encouraged to purchase.  It is one thing to replace one ipad mini but it is a different story when you have over 200 at your school.  If Apple wants to support education then they should give schools an option to turn in and upgrade.  This is why education is turning to Chromebooks which are web based.

The devices that do not qualify for iOS 10 do not qualify for a reason; the required "horsepower" to run iOS 10 is deemed insufficient by Apple.

It would make users even more unhappy if Apple qualified those devices and iOS ran so poorly that the devices would barely be usable. I am personally running iOS 9.3.5 despite the fact that my devices all qualify for iOS 10 (and 11 as well). My devices are all operating to my satisfaction. In my eyes, there is no need to update them to the "latest and greatest"...at least not yet.

I appreciate ALL of the feedback, as it answers my question as to why my iPad mini crashes so often, and why I am getting the annoying "oops" message. I have also been getting messages that certain apps won't update and that I don't have an Internet connection, which I know isn't true-as I use the 'net on my other devices. I didn't even know what version I had. This info also helped me to decide where to buy my next device. I am going directly to the Apple Store. At least I feel I will know what I am getting and find their prices to be competitive. Beware of other sources that offer Apple products, under the assumption of giving you a good deal by offering you junk you will probably never use, and still raising the price to cover that junk.
