Why does my icloud drive say there is not enoug...

I recently bought an extra 1 TB of storage on icloud drive for a total of 2 TB.  My icloud drive says there is 1.7 TB storage available; however, a message pops up on my Mac that says there is not enough Disk space after i attempt to paste more files and folders onto the drive from the Finder window. I have about 500 GB of video files and folders that i am still trying to upload to icloud drive without any success.

Where are these video files located?  All files on the iCloud Drive are mirrored on the boot drive the Mac.  So if the files are on an external HD you will need enough space on your boot drive to accommodate them.

The video files I am trying to upload are currently stored on an external hard drive.  I just bought an extra 1 TB of icloud drive storage space specifically because i do not have enough space on my Mac hard drive to store the video files.  So are you saying that I need to increase the storage capacity of my Mac in order to use the 1.7 TB still available on my icloud drive?  Seems like a scam...

How are you uploading the videos - Photos?

copy and paste. I  am copying the file folders from the external hard drive and pasting them into the icloud drive via Finder window. When i tried to upload via icloud.com website it doesnt allow me to upload the folders (i have to select all of the files inside the folders). It also takes about an hour to upload 10 GB via the website (vs copy and paste in finder window only takes a minute or two)

It's no scam.  The iCloud Drive is a syncing feature and all files on the drive are mirrored on the boot drive.  The Apple document described it in detail: iCloud Drive FAQ - Apple Support

You have them on the EHD so get another EHD as a Time Machine drive and use it to backup your boot drive and the drive containing your videos.  That way you have adequate backup coverage.

So iCloud Drive is not storage. It is only a backup. I too have the 2TB plan. I am trying to copy files off of another partition and I have the same issue.
