Prepare for APFS in macOS High Sierra

I have just read the Apple article "Prepare for APFS in macOS High Sierra" and have a question. I have a iMac that boots from an external SSD over thunderbolt. After I upgrade to High Sierra what filesystem will I be running and if it is APFS will I get the benefits?

I can't say for sure if the external will be automatically updated to APFS, but if it is, yes, you'll get the benefits.

I guess we all have to wait a few more days to see how well this mega transition goes. Here's hoping it all works well. We do deserve a modern and efficient file system to get the best out of our nice and fast SSD drives.
