Password Issues

About  a week ago I started getting this password popup from iCloud.

If I enter my apple id password it comes back. The only way I can get it to disappear is to keep hitting cancel.

Is the Apple ID password the same as the iCloud password or are the two different passwords?

What could have changed that would cause this popup to appear?

I haven't changed anything on my end so I'm at a loss why I keep getting this.

On a similar note I can receive email from my Apple (iCloud) mail account but when I try to send an email it also asks for a password and doesn't accept it. I think the two issues are related but I cannot find a resolution.

Any suggestions?
