Time Machine Error

I'm suddenly getting an error that my Time Machine backup drive doesn't have room for the backup.  Why are the older backups not being deleted to make room?

I've had this happen before and I just deleted and started from scratch - but deleting 1.5TB of data is long and tiresome.  I'd like to know the cause.

Would it have anything to do with the machine being restarted, drives being swapped out etc.  The Time Machine drive always remains plugged in.

Any help is appreciated.

Andy

It appears that by default, you must approve each and every non-routine deletion of a backup. It will ask for your permission to delete ONE.

If you give it permission to delete one Backup once, it will delete that one, and by the time it runs again it will likely not have room again, ask for your permission to delete one, and go on in a vicious cycle for quite a long time.

The solution I found was to tell it to go ahead and delete non-routine backups when needed, and do not bother to notify me when it does so. This allowed it to rush through a handful of backup deletions until enough room was available, then proceed to actually perform a Backup, which solved the problem once and for all.

The setting is in Time Machine system preference, on the (options) page, a check box something like:

[√] notify me when deleting old backups

Yes, if you change drives then Time Machine needs to do a full backup again, which may be the reason it is reporting out of space.
