How to set up connection Macbook with Windows l...

I want to transfer files from my old Windows laptop to my new Macbook Pro.

I bought a usb cable and a usb-c head, but when I plug it in and connect the two laptops, nothing happens: neither of the laptops seem to recognize the other device. 

What am I doing wrong? 

I learned about Migration Assitance, but I cannot seem to use it at this stage: I read online that Migration can only be used to transfer your files before you set up your new laptop.

So, is it imposible to make a connection between a Windows laptop and a Macbook Pro using a usb cable?  

Isn't easier to use an Ethernet cable and the normal network sharing as described here: How to connect with File Sharing on your Mac - Apple Support?
