Itunes sync fail with new iphone7

I have a brand new iphone7. itunes will not find or sync with new the new phone. I get the message "The iphone "x" cannot be used because it requires a newer version of itunes. Go to www.itunes.com/uk to download the latest version of iTunes. In iTunes, i have tried Help>Check for updates, and am told "This version of iTunes (12.1.3) is the current version.
I have looked on the apple site, and it is telling me there is a version 12.6.2 to download. i have downloaded this and tried to install the file but after the Welcom to iTunes first page, clicking next and confirming Installation Options, and install, I get the message: "iTunes installer completed. Errors occurred during installation before iTunes could be configured. Your system has not bee modified. To complete the installation, run the installer again. Click Finish to exit" That is the only option, and nothing happens.

I'm stuck!
