How do you sync an iPhone and iPad

My iPhone and iPad always seemed to "share" messages. As soon as I would type and send on one, it would show on the other. Unknown why, but I sent to a contact from my iPad, and the recipient received as if it was sent from iCloud account, and didn't know who I was.
