Problems with upgrading to macOS Sierra

I have a MacBook Air 2012 with 8GB RAM and 20GB free space. I've been trying to upgrade to MacOS Sierra from 10.9.5. Everything seems fine, in the App Store it shows OS Sierra as Installed, but when I go to About this Mac, it still shows OS 10.9.5. I have gone to Applications and installed again, but no luck. A possible issue is that when the installation is done and it goes to Restart, it always hangs on the Restart, and I have to physically power the machine off and on. [This is a general issue - Restart always seems to cause it to hang.]

Thanks for any help.

See this article for possible solutions:

macOS Sierra Update 10.12.5 is stuck while installing/restarting

20GB free space is quite low, and may be the problem. It is considered best to keep 10 -15Gbs free space on your disc so that the system can function properly. It may just be that whilst having only 20GBs free is problematic for the system

while it is doing a major upgrade to a new OS. So if you can free up space by moving your files to an external drive.

Have you made a backup, or two. Did you check that third party apps you are using have updates for Sierra, and you need to check that any devices you use are compatible or have updated drivers etc.

Have you ran a verify on your disk in Disk Utility to check for any errors?

Do you have any anti virus or cleaner optimiser apps running that may interfere with the installation, uninstall them according to the developers of the apps, you don't need them.

If you have the Install macOS Sierra .app in your Applications folder make a copy of it and keep it safe, it gets deleted

once the installation has been successful.

If you are having a problem with Restart it might be better to find out what is causing that first, try downloading, installing and running this, https://etrecheck.com/ and post the results back here.

They're not updating Sierra they are upgrading to Sierra.

Install in safe mode.
