losing ram memory
I have an iMac (20 inch, early 2008.)
Running OS X EL Capitan (10.11.6)
I have 4 GB ram memory (maximum for this iMac).
Today I am having trouble holding on to the ram memory.
I reboot and get about 2gb showing which is normal. But it quickly goes down to around 400mb, even without me using the computer.
I have tried rebooting, a hard reboot (with plug removed from socket for 5 minutes). I have tried disk first aid. Which finds no problems. I have done a complete virus scan.
But problem persists.
Any ideas for anything else I can try will be appreciated.
thank you.

Apart from rebooting, virus scanning, disk first aid running constantly for the last couple of days I have not done anything different today.......but.....the problem seems now to have cleared itself. Whatever was draining my ram memory has now stopped and everything is okay again.
Thanks to those who replied to me.
Please download and run EtreCheck, created by one of own helpers here in ASC. It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.
In addition to using Etrecheck to see what is consuming RAM, your Early 2008 can actually take 6GB of RAM.
