You can, but it won't continue to use the old backup.

Also, the odds of being able to restore a backup from a NAS is not good.

The Drobo (at least this Drobo isn't) on a NAS. It was hooked up directly via a Thunderbolt 2 connection.

Yes.

What happens to the backups from my previous Mac?

They sit there on the Drobo until you delete them.

It is best to erase the partition rather than dragging them to the Trash and trying to empty.
