iTunes cannot open because of a problem...

So I found out my online banking no longer works because I need a newer iOS on my phone. So I try to download the new iOS but iTunes says I need the newest version of iTunes to update my phone.

I follow the dialogue box to update iTunes, but it sends me to the mac app store which is buggy and doesn't show any relevant updates.

So I look online for a fix and people suggest manually downloading iTunes 12.6.2 from the apple website and installing that way. When I try to open this newly installed version of iTunes I instantly get a dialogue box saying "iTunes cannot open because of a problem."

I cannot delete iTunes and start from scratch because apparently: “iTunes can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by OS X."

I am running Yosemite and a high end retina Macbook so that isn't the problem. Most likely the two versions of iTunes conflicting somehow, but I really don't know how to go about fixing this and couldn't find anyone talking about this already.

I would really appreciate some help if anyone has an insight on how to fix this, I need to be able to use online banking and iTunes ASAP!!

I am so sick of constant arbitrary compatibility problems with all of my apple devices...

Download and install iTunes from here:

That's what I did already. From what I can tell that is what caused the problem in the first place... I doubt installing the same thing again will help will it?

We won't know until/unless you try.

OK I'll give it a go. Thanks for the speedy reply btw

Just tried and as expected it is still all exactly the same. I think the problem arose in the first place from that new version of iTunes conflicting with the version that was installed already. Like maybe it didn't overwrite the old one and now they're conflicting. Really don't know how to solve this since Apple helpfully made iTunes impossible to uninstall.

You can try reinstalling the current version of iTunes from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ over the top of the existing one. Or see this guide to uninstall iTunes from a Mac: https://www.inforaid.com/how-to-uninstall-itunes-from-mac-os-x-best-method/ then restore one of these recent builds direct from Apple's secure servers:
