Moving Mail to new laptop
I want to get all my old mail, mail boxes and messages on to my new MacPBook Pro (with Sierra) but I do not want to use the Migration Assistant. Could someone please talk me through this.
Use Mail's Import Mailboxes... function: https://help.apple.com/mail/mac/10.12/index.html?localePath=en.lproj
You would connect the two Macs in the same manner as using Migration Assistant. If you need help with that write back.

Thanks, I have the same question. If you could discuss how to connect the 2 machines to accomplish this? Target disk mode? Am I exporting the mbox file, dragging and dropping the mbox files from old computer to new computer, and importing them? In other words, I could use ethernet connection or airdrop?
I tried this and could not figure out a way to do it based on your response. Please clarify or be more specific.
Mike
Ethernet or Air Drop should work. I have also used screen sharing to transfer data.
Move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support
I see the confusion...
Moving the files isn't a problem. The problem is what files to move and where to move them. There's plenty do deal with...Accounts...library...passwords...emails...is the process written down anywhere? I did not want to do the full Target Disk thing because my old Mac had issues that I didn't want to transfer over. I need, however, to move over my email exactly as it is.
Mike - Your observation is a good one. If one does a "clean install" the purpose is to get rid of all the junk files that have been stored on the computer. You know, the cookies from all the web sites ones has visited (including the forever cookies from the likes of eBay and others), crash reports, ...... and the list goes on. The HT articles never (I know, Never say never) go into details what stuff is actually copied when one does a transfer.
I just finished a "clean install" and trying to populate the new disk with just the Applications, Documents, etc. Mail is another one I need to bring across. Sometimes we don't want to do a global move.
I am currently doing this the way the link states. Maybe my description will help (altho by now I'm sure you've already figured something out).
I have my old computer's hard drive (using as external now) connected to my new MacBook Pro.
I went to new computer and opened the email application.
On that I went to "File" and clicked on "Import mailboxes"
Since both my computers are Macs, I selected "Apple Mail"
Then it had me choose from where... which I wasn't sure about. I selected my Macintosh HD (which was my old computer), went to Users and selected the user name I used. I "chose" that since I wasn't sure what area from that to narrow it down.
NOTE: It took FOREVER! (A Very long time) of the wheel turning before it popped up with anything. It gave me a list of files? to import. I unclicked a few that were a mailbox I don't use anymore and left the others checked. Clicked import.
It is currently importing ... and is taking FOREVER... but it is appearing on my new computer's email sidebar as described. I'm not going to enjoy cleaning it all up and reorganizing it how I want, but I like knowing all the mail will be there, and I'm not just relegated to what was still on the server. I'm hoping my account set ups will all move over as well... not seeing it yet... b/c I have many and don't want to reset them all up.
FYI I called Apple Support and the person I spoke to today was NOT helpful. Earlier this week (before I had the right cords to connect the two computers) I spoke to someone who seemed extremely knowledgeable! So if I get stuck with this, I'll call again and hope I get someone more knowledgeable next time.
Good luck!
