How to remove virus/malware from macbook pro?

I think my macbook pro has been infected with virus/malware. Sometimes when i open a browser a random ad pops up. Sometimes if i click something in a browser a new window opens up usually about some ad or virus alert. I use chrome extensively but also safari. I have noticed this behaviour on both browsers.

Actions taken so far: Macbook software is up to date. Tried resetting browser settings. I don't have any extensions active on Safari and only extension active on chrome is ad block pro. Did some research and downloaded Clam Xav. Did full scan and result was clean. But i still get occasional pop up ad.

Is there anything else i can use to scan my macbook? I have heard about Sophos and Malwarebytes. It is good? Should i give it a try? I don't want anything permanent so i will most likely delete them all after using them to see if there are any virus/malware found.

You don’t have a virus, because there are none in the wild for Mac. That’s why ClamXav didn’t find anything. Do not, ever, install Sophos or any other anti-virus apps. They do nothing useful and may damage your system software and slow it down.

Clearing browser history and web data is usually all that’s needed for dealing with malware/adware. For Safari, relaunching it with the Shift key down will take care of this. Otherwise, be careful which websites you visit.

Malwarebytes is well respected here. It doesn’t run anything in the background. It checks only when you launch it, so you don’t have to delete it after install.

I did clean all the web browser history but it did not help. I do visit trusted and authentic websites only. Which is why i am so paranoid about these pop ups as this is first occurrence on my macbook in 5 yrs. I will download and use malwarebytes as you and Niel suggested. Thank you!
