How to reinstall OS onto my MacBook Pro

Hello all,

I've run into problems while trying to reset my device to factory new. I have erased the disk via "Disk Utilities" and now am trying to reinstall an OS. When attempting to install the default OS X El Capitan I get an error that reads "Service temporarily unavailable, please try again later." 

After reading multiple forums I decided I would attempt to install via a bootable USB. I could not find the El Capitan OS via the App Store, which led me to believe that it was no longer available for download (my mother also told me that she had last updated it to Sierra). So I made a USB into an Install Sierra OS. It seemed to be successful though when I try to boot from the disk I simply get a Symbol, (Not gonna work dude symbol). Can anyone help?
