2008 Black MacBook with apple logo and spinning...

When I turn on my MacBook mid 2008 black model A1185, all that comes up after the tone, is a grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel.  It stays that way.  How do I override to get to desktop screen or can anyone tell me what is wrong or why this may be happening?

Thanks in advance.

Greetings hughes32w,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It seems like your MacBook will not finish booting to the desktop. It could be caused by trouble that can be repaired by using Disk Utility. I would recommend you read this article and use it to help troubleshoot the issue.

Disk Utility can fix certain disk problems—for example, multiple apps quit unexpectedly, a file is corrupted, an external device doesn’t work properly, or your computer won’t start up.

Disk Utility for Mac: Repair a disk using Disk Utility

Take care.

Had you already tried (could take awhile waiting) to start the black MacBook to run

in Safe mode, that may help. There is an article and the details are important, due

to the nature of troubleshooting; this could be a hardware issue, software, or both.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

If you can get the Mac to start past the initial window, you may have to supply your

admin password to go into Safe mode; then use Disk Utility in the system to check

the hard disk. If not, you may have to start from either original Disc media or see if

your model MacBook could use Recovery or internet recovery to access Disk Utility.

Also, if you still have original DVD install restore media discs, you may have to see

if you could start up the computer with the disk #1 in the optical drive; try to access

the Disk Utility there. ~ (If your MacBook was able to see update and have internal

Recovery partition installed on its hard disk drive, it may be able to start in Recovery

or go online to see about online macOS Recovery options; this also has Disk Utility.)

Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support

//support.apple.com/en-us/HT203176

See how to use Disk Utility; in above link. Depending on your installed boot system, it may

or not be possible to start up from Recovery System or Internet Recovery.  Sometimes not.

•Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks - Apple Support

Learn about using Disk Utility to verify or ... you will need to start up from

your Mac OS X Install DVD and use Disk Utility on that disc to make ...

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201639

Your computer may have Lion 10.7.5 installed, that has no install DVD media; so an

older included install-restore media disk kit was the key. It would appear that your

black 2008 MacBook 13-inch shipped with Leopard 10.5 on 'grey-label' install discs.

These would be correct ones; or later a 10.6 Snow Leopard 'retail DVD' could work.

Hopefully you can get past the grey screen with an Apple. May be that your system

could have mild corruption; or perhaps an original hard disk drive is worn & tired.

Good luck & happy computing!
