I am trying to update iOS on iPhone 5c before r...

I need to update an 5c ios as the back up was made with later ios so can't restor. Suggestions??

Go to settings - general software update update over your wifi

Then after update go to settings iCloud back up now make sure iCloud back up is on

Then when you charge iPhone it will be automatically backed up to iCloud.
