Freeing Up Memory

We are currently trying to free up memory on our iMAC. We noticed we had 130GB of movies and began the process of removing them. While we deleted movies and photos to free up memory, we would see our storage space increase but only temporarily. All of a sudden we would see our storage space increase to 25GB (after we deleted photos and movies) but then we would check the storage space 15 mins later and our storage space would decrease to 5GB. We then clicked the apple icon at the top left, went to "about this mac" and then went to storage. We then noticed the size of our movie storage had decreased from 130GB to 110 but our "other" storage has increased from 200GB to 220GB. My question is why is it I am deleting movies and photos, clearly seeing the storage space of these type of files decrease but seeing my "other" increase  almost simultaneously? After we delete everything we empty the trash or we clear out the recently deleted folder in iPhoto. Can anyone help.
