I would like to be able to have my appointments in my calendar to remain indefinitely. But it seems that they only stay for the calendar year. Unless you've removed them, they're still there. The problem is that the built in Calendar app will only show the past year's appointments. You'll need to use another app to view anything further back. Week Cal is one that will do this.
