VGA monitor hook up

I have a MacBook Pro serial c1MGY48VDV13, connected to a DELL VGA monitor via an Insignia Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adaptor. The monitor on the MacBook laptop is not functioning.

The Dell monitor screen shows the MacBook mouse cursor and it functions. But the background is solid grey only.

How do I fix it so I can get the full output on the Dell monitor?
