apple mail app not connecting to gmail or icloud

I can still access Gmail via the browser and via the Gmail app for the iPhone and iPad but I am not able to reconnect to Gmail from the Apple Mail App or Spark App on the Mac, iPhone and iPad nor  the Thunderbird App on the Mac.

 

I have set turned off 2 Factor Authentication on Gmail so that this is not an issue. I am not using 2FA on the Mac either.

 

I can still access my email account from icloud.com in my browser.

 

Thunderbird reports that I have a problem with my account name or password but note that I can  read email on the browser using that same information.

 

Does anyone have any idea as to what I can do to once again get access to Gmail and iCloud from third party apps? It would also be interesting to know why all three devices lost access over the same night??

 

Strangely, I did not lose access to my Exchange email account from the Apple Mail App and I am able to connect to it from all the third party mail apps.

Thanks for the reply, but none of this vast amount of information has solved my problem.  I can only use Gmail via a browser.

 

I am still unable to connect to the IMAP server imap.gmail.com no matter what settings I try on the connection. 

 

Apple Mail does not even let me configure the settings but goes straight into the attempt to connect then when the connection fails the account is set offline and none of the settings are visible to configure.

 

Still searching for an explanation and a solution.

If you go into the App Store you can download Gmail and access you account from there. Or you may just be able to save the safari browser to your home screen as an app (hyperlink) . The "app" will then take you to the website in safari.

Issue Resolved!

 

I had a chat session with Apple Support for 3 hours - the two guys were very helpful as we worked through a wide range of tests.  As a final resort I was asked if I saw the same results using the cellular network as on WiFi. Cellular worked where WiFi failed.  After rebooting the router all problems went away on all my apple devices.  (This also fixed a long outstanding problem with an XBox used by one of my sons).

 

No idea why the router was interfering with just those email ports and nothing else, but it is worth a try the next time anyone else meets the problem.

 

BTW I have a Netgear Nighthawk R7000.  I rarely reboot it.  Last time was 4 months ago, i think.

I am so, so tired of dealing with these two companies Apple and Google in how they changed their authentication process, some nights I just don't want to input another password.  It would be niceif they clearly explained what they changed and how to upgrade or if the email clients did it automatically, but it is just a nightmare of changing and enter codes, and two passwords into this app for tht app. I am beginning to think I have been dupped by tech company management. They bragg all the time and are going crazy trying to get code out faster and better but also cheaper. No can do. I kind of believe in basic fundemntal principles and I hear too much magical thinking from senior execs.

I have the same problem with all my Apple devices and I'm sure it's not the wifi issue since the Gmail doesn't work while using mobile data or wifi at work. I am quite desperate.
