MBP does not shot correct free space

When I add up the sizes of the folders in my root directory I get roughly 701GB used.

My MBP tells me I only 306.3MB free. What has happened to nearly 300GB of free space?

I have contacted Apple and wiped the drive twice which have only solved the issue for a couple of weeks before I am running out of space again.

15" MPB Pro Late 2013, 16BG RAM, 1TB SSD

Has anyone else out there had this strange behavior and what can be done to keep it from happening again?
