Unable to empty Trash

Hi all, I am new to Mac after defecting from Windows after Win 10 debacle, so am learning the differences and enjoying the experience Although I have manage to sort most issues myself, I am stuck on one which I am loathe to 'mess around with' because it involves folders relating to the Mac HDD.

I am trying to empty my Trash folder but there remains about 8 folders that I am unable to delete.

I get several error messages as follows:

  1. Some items in the Trash cannot be deleted because of System Integrity protection.
  2. The operation can't be completed because item "2016-10-03-155613" is in use.
  3. The operation can't be completed because the item "Macintosh DH" is in use.

Can anyone help?

I have a screenshot of the expanded folders in the Trash if that helps?

Thanks

SjH

Suggestions: (1) reboot;  (2) Disk Utility > First Aid.

Thank you for your prompt reply Gerald, but that procedure didn't do the trick unfortunately.

Problem solved !

The folders in Trash were folders I had deleted from Time Machine Backups. You should just leave the old backups to be deleted automatically. There is a procedure to remove these deletions from the Trash folder via Terminal as follows:

Thank you to the author of the above article. SEO Michael.

You are a total star! I've spent days trying/failing to empty the trash after manually deleting old backups. Thank you!
