How do I connect USB type A to a firewire port ...
I have a MacBook Pro with Retina display running Sierra 10.12.6. How do I connect a male USB type A to a firewire female connection on my MacBook Pro.

You don't.
Every Mac that shipped with FireWire also had at least one USB-A port. Get yourself a powered USB Hub and live happily ever after.
MacBooks with Retina display do not have a FireWire port.
