iMac running slow (beachballing)

My primary applications (safari, firefox, MS word)  take a very, very long time to start with the beachball hanging out on the screen when apps are started. It’s making the machine essentially useless.

The machine performed okay up until about two months ago. It was infected by some virus/trojan horse/etc. at some point recently (upon opening up Safari, a window would pop up and say “your computer is infected, call this number right away or you’ll lose your passwords etc.” and other scare tactics (obviously BS).

I installed and ran Malwarebytes, and that took care of that issue; however, the computer still runs very slow with a lot of beachballing going on.

I tried upgrading from Mavericks to Sierra a couple of weeks ago, but that didn't make any difference.

I mainly use the computer for word docs and doing yahoo mail with Safari or Firefox, as well as other web browsing (stocks, online banking and such).

I've included an EtreCheck report below.

Many thanks!

David
