Issues trying to access and backup hard drive

Okay, so this all started when I changed my username from 'Owner' to my name. Since then, I have not been able to access my MacBook at all.

It's a 2013 MacBook Pro running OS 10.something, it's Sierra I know that. I keep it pretty up to date. I changed my username by going into settings and clicking the lockpad, changing it, and then clicking the lockpad again to save it. I'm the only user on my MacBook.

Since then, I haven't been able to access it. I've tried changing my password by going into the terminal and changing it, but all that does is when it boots up, it asks me to log it, then it goes to a screen with an generic user picture and asks for Username and Password - which I manually type in and it does not accept. I've tried both 'Owner' and the username I changed it to. If I click the little arrow to go back, it asks for "other', click on that, then back to username and password.

So I've come to the conclusion that I need to reformat. HOWEVER, I really don't want to do that unless I can get the majority of my files off.

I've gone into the disk utility, accessed my Mac HD by mounting it (which is prompts me to enter password) - success. Go to file > new image > blank image > save it as Mac Backup or something, to my external hard drive, keep everything else as is (size=100MB, format=Mac OS Extended (Journaled), encryption=none, partitions=single partition - GUID Partition Map, image format=read/write disk image).

I click save and it says "Creating Mac HD Backup.dmg operation failed... operation failed with status -61.

I have also tried going to file > new image > image from "Mac HD" > save to external, format=compressed, no encryption and it says that "You do not have permission to write to the location you have selected"; do I need to type in my password somewhere, and it's not prompting me??

I'd really love some help and insight because I have a year and a half of schooling and assignments I could use for grad school, not to mention endless pictures and music and movies. I'm mostly interested in previous school stuff and my pictures.
