macbook air sierra all emails and texts disappe...

My entire inbox and messages suddenly disappeared from my MacBook Air (using Siera). I have the Mac backed up with a Mac external drive, but i can't see a large block of the emails and texts (for example), March - July. Even when I do, I have no idea how to get them back into the inbox or transfer them back to iMessages. Do I need to buy a software program and, if so, which one is the most recommended?

I see there are two separate issues: one with emails and one with iMessages.

As for emails, check for the missing items on the web (I think every email service provides a browser version of the service). If they can’t be located in browser, but you are able to find them with search in Mail, take notice of the mailbox, or folder, the emails are stored in (it’s shown next to the message subject—like this), and then look for this mailbox in sidebar. In that case, it’s likely that those messages have been moved to a local folder and deleted from the server.

With iMessage, there’s a slightly more complex thing. Since Apple does not sync messages with cloud, they’re stored locally on devices. Once deleted, they can’t be easily recovered.
