Blank screen when waking from sleep

I have a 13” MacBook Air (2017), running macOS Sierra 10.12.6. This problem began after I purchased the new MacBook Air and migrated my files from an old (2015) MacBook Air.

The screen often is blank when I put the computer to sleep and then wake it up. Doesn’t matter how I put it to sleep, and sometimes this happens when I restart—blank (but backlit) screen when I should see the login screen. I typically do not see a cursor. Shutting and opening the lid a few times brings the login screen back up.

Things I have tried: resetting SMC and NVRAM do not work. Removing all login items does not work (this can occur even with no programs running). Creating a different admin account does not work. Rebooting into safe mode fixes the problem, but when I return to normal mode the problem recurs.

In Console the problem is accompanied by messages from Windowserver: “Driver reported mode info is out of sync with current mode info”.

Hi wkdewey,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. I understand that you're seeing a blank, backlit screen on your Mac when you put it to sleep or wake it up. I know it's important to see the correct screens when performing these actions and I'd like to help. I see that you've done quite a bit of troubleshooting so far, based on that information I'd recommend trying the following steps:
  1. Choose Apple menu > Restart. After your Mac restarts (some Mac computers play a startup sound), press and hold the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears, then release the keys.

  2. Click Disk Utility, then click Continue.

  3. In the sidebar, select the disk you want to repair.

  4. Click the First Aid button .

If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back up your data and replace the disk. You can’t repair it. Otherwise, continue to step 6.

  5. Click Run.

If Disk Utility reports that the disk appears to be OK or has been repaired, you’re done. You can click Show Details to see more information about the repairs. Otherwise, you may need to do one of the following.

    •

If Disk Utility reports “overlapped extent allocation” errors, two or more files occupy the same space on your disk, and at least one of them is likely to be corrupted. You need to check each file in the list of affected files. Most of the files in the list have aliases in a DamagedFiles folder at the top level of your disk.

      •

If you can replace a file or re-create it, delete it.

      •
      •

If it contains information you need, open it and examine its data to make sure it hasn’t been corrupted.

      •

    •
    •

If Disk Utility can’t repair your disk or it reports “The underlying task reported failure,” try to repair the disk or partition again. If that doesn’t work, back up as much of your data as possible, reformat the disk, reinstall macOS, then restore your backed-up data.

Repair a disk

Let me know what you find.

Best Regards.
