Mail unexpectedly quits on launch macOS Sierra ...

Problem started happening well after last software update.  My Mail program pulls in accounts from Comcast and Gmail.  First problem was that it started to crash when I searched for an old email (using the search box within Mail), and then seemed to crash when I scrolled down (through old emails) in the inbox.  I "rebuilt" the Comcast inbox, which had a huge number of old messages in it, and thought the problem got better.  That was last week.  Now the program crashes before it even opens fully.  Thoughts?
