System software update/boot stuck for 12 hours

Basic problem is that booting my 2010 MPB with Sierra in any way gets stuck once start up bar reaches 100%. Tried resetting PRAM, safe boot, target boot via Thunderbolt to another Mac (no hard drive mounts on booted Mac but connection symbol shows), and Internet recovery boot, which does open Disk Utilities with other expected options. Disk Utilities shows HD about half full.  Performed First Aid for repairs.  Disk Utilities also shows Mac System Base disk image. After First Aid, proceeded to option to Install new system software.  Downloaded in about 8 minutes, automatically started up (no chime at all since problem started), boot bar reached 100% after an hour or so, then, once again, stuck there. Caps lock shows green.

Apologies--noticed posted in wrong place

I've asked for your thread to be relocated.

If your experience is like a recent one of mine you may have some bad sectors/clusters that are not being flagged up by disk utility or cleaned up during a reformat. I ended up doing a secure erase of the affected drive before another clean install which seems to be doing the trick so far. I'll know for sure if it stays stable after I reinstall the sound library in Logic.
