Problem with preview in iTunes Store

In the last 2 weeks I have started experienced problems with the preview facility in iTunes. In some cases an entire album will not preview; in others it will only preview certain tracks, jumping through the listing unpredictably. If I go back and click against one of the skipped tracks I cannot get a preview and instead the button next to the track name contains a blue square that blinks and is surrounded by the progress bar broken into squares that are also blinking. Moreover, if I clink another skipped track the button behaves the same way so there can be several of them blinking at the same time.

But having experienced this I can then move to another album which previews as normal (and in one case a couple of days ago I successfully downloaded a couple of tracks without a hassle).

On a couple of occasions yesterday I selected individual tracks to preview (ie. not the preview all feature) and the blinking started, but then the preview sample began to play without a hitch. So this problem is intermittent and unpredictable.

About 10 days ago I spent about 2 hours trying to get to the bottom of this problem with the help of Apple Tech. Support. This included checking that video clips running from YouTube were starting quickly so that there was no sign of a streaming problem. In the end they concluded that there must be an compatibility issue between Windows Vista (as installed on my PC) and iTunes 12.1.3 which is the most recent release for non-Apple devices. However, in the recent period before this problem arose (and subsequently) I have not accepted any updates for Vista and as far as I'm aware there's been no further update to iTunes 12 in the same period. Moreover I assume that if there was some form of synchronising or compatibility issue it would probably affect every preview rather than being selective.

Any observations, suggestions, etc. gratefully received.

Further to this (rather than in response), yesterday I previewed something like 2 dozen albums. About half have been released in about 2-3 weeks. Some of them previewed without a problem; others wouldn't preview at all. I have previewed an album released in 1971 without a problem but one released in 2010 wouldn't preview at all. Another one from 2016 would only preview the 1st track while another released earlier this year would only preview certain tracks.

The albums have been released both by major record companies and by independents and cover a range of styles or genres. If the Apple Support diagnosis is correct and this is a problem with compatibility between iTunes and MS Vista then I would expect to see a consistent problem, not one that appears to be inconsistent.

I have preferred to buy my music via iTunes as some tracks are cheaper than other sources and the majority benefit from a 90 second preview. However it looks like I'll have to go back to buying from Amazon because at least a 30 second preview is better than none at all.

Still interested in views, suggestions, etc.

Still have no idea what is/was the problem but it seems to have disappeared as quickly and mysteriously as it began. I have just successfully previewed more than half a dozen of the albums that would not play at all previously.

It would be more comforting to know what has been the problem.

If you're one of the two people of clicked on 'I have this question too' then hopefully you've noticed a resumption of normal service.
