macOS Sierra 10.12.6: Mail Draft Copies Issue

(Writing this for my aunt, whom I'm trying to help solve the issue.)

Product: Mail, macOS Sierra 10.12.6

Computer: MacBook Air (recent)

Folder: Gmail folder on the computer (not IMAP Gmail folder)

Situation: When my aunt is writing an email to someone (anyone, not specific to a particular contact), she ends up with numerous draft copies of the message, that don't disappear when she sends it. Each is slightly different (I think it's auto-saving), but the last one she sent had 8 copies in the folder (including the last, sent version).

Addendums: The folder has at least 250 messages in it. My father (who has worked with computers all his life) thinks that either the folder is corrupted or it's too full.

Question: Do you agree with my father, or is there something else that might be going on? Has anyone else had this problem?
