I am trying to erase my phone using recovery mode because I have forgotten my passcode and it keeps saying that it cannot connect to itunes and I have to enter my passcode after a period of time, do I have to just keep repeating recovery mode??

If it is asking for the passcode, then it is not getting into Recovery Mode. Are you using the latest version of iTunes, 12.6.2? What computer OS are you using? The latest version of iTunes requires Windows 7 or above, or OS X 10.9.5 or above. Check.
